Cancer Thank You

November 3, 2014 Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the tongue 74 year old female
November 4, 2014 Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma of the buccal mucosa   34 year old female
December 30, 2014   Dysplasia (pre-malignant) of the tongue 43 year old male
January 8, 2015 Malignant Melanoma of the hard palate 78 year old male
January 20, 2015 Squamous Cell Carcinoma of maxillary tuberosity 73 year old female

I thank you. Your patients thank you. During the three month period from November, 2014 through January, 2015 five patients referred to our office have had the above biopsy results. One patient's family physician had initially referred him to a dermatologist who felt the lesion was innocent and did not suggest a biopsy. The concerned dentist subsequently referred his patient to our office and the palatal lesion was biopsied. The pathologist's diagnosis: malignant melanoma.

I thank you. Your patients thank you for your thorough oral examination, professionalism, and caring. I thank you and your patients thank you because your actions made a difference. A biopsy was obtained, a diagnosis made, and treatment has now been initiated to affect a cure.

Most patients with oral cancer are over age 50, but 10% of cases are diagnosed in younger individuals.

What does cancer look like? It looks like: A slowly healing ulcer, a red lesion, leukoplakia, etc.

The likelihood of carcinoma mandates the biopsy of ANY and ALL suspicious lesions.
